In the 5-Day Kegel Challenge forms, I invited participants to ask any questions they may have. Recently a member asked:
Are ben wa balls actually effective?
I’m sure others are wondering this as well!
For those who don’t know, Ben wa Balls (aka Kegel Balls, aka vaginal balls) are small weighted balls that are placed in the vagina.
The idea is to add resistance to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. Like adding dumbbells to your biceps curl for example.
There are very few research studies out there that have tested kegel balls. There is this one: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11574936 which compares a pelvic floor exercise program to a kegel ball exercise program. It was a small sample size and the study is from way back in 2001, so take it with a grain of salt. BUT it did show significant improvements in both groups, but more with the kegel ball group. (Note the study went on for 4 months… so if you don’t see improvement in leaking with doing kegels for only a week, don’t quit. It takes a while!)
Here’s my opinion on the kegel balls:
They will work the best IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THE KEGEL.
Were you never taught how to kegel? Most of us were told to do them, but aren’t quite sure how to. I have solved this issue by creating the 5-Day Kegel Challenge for FREE on Facebook! It runs every 3 weeks, so click this link to join the next round: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2433265273418440/ . See you there!
